Look what I found in the attic... A picture of the tree that nearly killed us all...! You might want to read my story to understand:)
Picking just one Christmas story to tell you seems difficult. I mean, there was the time our Christmas tree nearly caught on fire because we were still using real candles on a real tree (how old fashioned)... We carried on singing Christmas songs when we suddenly all had trouble breathing - smoke started filling the little living room we sat in.
My mom must have put too much angel hair on the tree. Thank the Lord my father was a fire fighter and acted quickly.
Then, there was the time we all got food poisoning because my mother decided to try something new in the kitchen. She was not one for tradition. Every Christmas, she came up with a new menu. Well, this one Christmas, she discovered cream puffs. We all loved them so much I think we merely overate, and so, we all spent Christmas Day throwing up.
Then, there was the time when I met Mr. Turkey for the first time. I spent about a year in Canada at my sister's house. So when Christmas came around, they made a turkey. Up until that point, I somehow didn't believe turkeys were for real. I thought that turkeys were a made up thing Americans played on TV.
Let me not forget the time when I just went "all prophet" on Christmas. Who needs tradition? Why can't we just do something different? Who cares about the "right thing to do" for Christmas? So, together with my sister, I baked Jesus a birthday cake, and we gave gifts to each other while singing happy birthday to the Lord. It's kind of cute, but hey... it was a bit dramatic.
I can see that yet another story is waiting to be written as we stare this year's Christmas in the eye. Here I am sitting at our dining room table in our new centre in Benoni, South Africa. It's hot outside, and it just feels off. Who knows what crazy thing we'll do here as the heat gets to us...
And now, I suppose I should conclude with a moral, hey?!
The morals of the stories are:
1. Get a fake Christmas tree
2. Don't overeat
3. Yes - turkeys are real
4. Tradition is not all bad
No matter where in the world you are, December means Christmas.
In it all, celebrating Jesus is what really matters. Jesus is who makes this time special! If you have Him, it doesn't matter if your Christmas tree burns to a crisp or you experience something contrary to your template. With Him, you have it all.
So, take this Christmas season and just celebrate the Lord Jesus with all you have got. As you do, write your own story and have fun with it.
From my heart to yours - Merry Christmas!
